The essence of Oaxaca





Its name comes from the Nahuatl Huaxyacac, which means "At the tip of the gourds"







It is located in the south of the country, bordering Veracruz, Puebla, Chiapas and Guerrero; it is the fifth largest state in the Republic.





It occupies 4.8% of the national territory. The Zapotec, Mixtec, Mazatec, Chinantec, Mixe, Huave, Chontal and Popoloca ethnic groups coexist there (in danger of extinction).

It has the largest number of indigenous language speakers in the entire country, with more than a million people, 40% of them, 30 to 64 years of age, speak an indigenous language.



The prominent historical and public figures are: Benito Juárez, Porfirio Díaz, Hermanos Flores Magón, the painters Miguel Cabrera, Rodolfo Morales, Rufino Tamayo and Francisco Toledo; the musicians Macedonio Alcalá and Eduardo Mata; as well as the composer Álvaro Carrillo and the writer Andrés Henestrosa.





It is considered one of the main tourist destinations in Latin America. Its natural and architectural beauties are countless, many of them have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.








The Oaxacan industry ranges from the manufacture of paper and textiles, the sugar production, to the elaboration of handicrafts, which have made the state world famous.
